How Many Exercises per Workout? A Science Guide
In practice, 4–6 exercises per workout and 1–3 exercises per muscle group per session cover most hypertrophy programs. Research does not identify an “optimal number of exercises” — it shows that sets per exercise, exercise variety and weekly volume drive growth, and the exercise count follows from them. “How many exercises should I do?” is usually the wrong first question. The exercise count is the output of three decisions the research actually speaks to: how many hard sets each muscle gets per week, how many sets you do per exercise, and how many different movements a muscle needs. Get those right and the number of exercises per workout falls out on its own — and stays inside the time you have.
Why there is no single “right” number
Three lines of evidence constrain the answer without fixing it:
Sets per exercise. A meta-analysis of single versus multiple sets found that multiple sets per exercise produced about 40 % larger hypertrophy effect sizes than a single set. Two to three sets and four to six sets were not significantly different from each other, though the effect sizes trended upward with more sets (0.24 for one set, 0.34 for two to three, 0.44 for four to six) (Krieger 2010). In trained men, one, three and five sets per exercise per session all built strength equally over eight weeks, while muscle growth in the biceps and thighs favoured the higher-volume groups (Schoenfeld et al. 2019). Reading both together: the first two or three sets of an exercise deliver most of its value; further sets still add, at a diminishing rate.
Exercise variety. Muscles are not uniform. When quadriceps training used a single exercise for 12 weeks, some heads (vastus medialis, rectus femoris) did not grow significantly; when exercises were varied, all four heads grew — and the varied-exercise group at constant load gained the most strength (Fonseca et al. 2014). A systematic review of eight trials concluded that some systematic variation enhances regional hypertrophy and strength, whereas excessive random rotation and redundant exercises may hinder gains (Kassiano et al. 2022). Randomizing exercises session by session produced growth similar to a fixed selection, with higher motivation (Baz-Valle et al. 2019). Translation: a large muscle benefits from more than one movement pattern; a third or fourth near-identical exercise adds little.
Weekly volume and its distribution. Growth increases with weekly hard sets per muscle, with diminishing returns — and once weekly volume is accounted for, the effect of training frequency on hypertrophy was compatible with zero (Pelland et al. 2025). How many exercises you place in one session is therefore mostly a question of quality and time, not of a growth requirement. How many exercises per muscle group?
Practice recommendation, derived from the constraints above: 1–3 exercises per muscle group per session, and 2–4 different exercises per muscle group across the week.
- With 2–4 hard sets per exercise, one to three exercises give a muscle roughly 4–10 hard sets in a session — half of a typical 10–20-set week spread over two sessions, the productive range described in the hypertrophy guide.
- Large, multi-region muscles (back, quadriceps, chest, glutes) do best with at least two movement patterns per week that load different regions — a row and a pulldown, a squat and a leg extension, a press and a fly (Fonseca et al. 2014; Kassiano et al. 2022).
- Small muscles (biceps, triceps, side delts, calves) rarely need more than one or two exercises per session. Their volume comes from sets, not from exercise count.
- The second exercise for a muscle is worth more than the fifth set of the first one. Once a movement carries about five hard sets in a session, per-set returns are flattening (Krieger 2010) — a complementary exercise that hits a different region is usually the better addition.
How many exercises per workout?
Practice recommendation by split. Each row assumes 2–4 hard sets per exercise and 2–3 minutes of rest between compound sets:

The minimum that still covers the body is small. A time-efficiency review recommends prioritizing bilateral multi-joint exercises and performing at least one leg-pressing exercise, one upper-body pull and one upper-body push, with a minimum of four weekly sets per muscle group (Iversen et al. 2021). Everything beyond that is dosing, not necessity.
Is 7 exercises per workout too much?
Not by itself — it depends on the sets behind them. Seven exercises × 3 hard sets = 21 working sets, which is a normal upper-body or leg day for an intermediate lifter and fits 60–75 minutes. Seven exercises × 5 sets = 35 sets, which is a 2-hour session and, for most muscles, past the point where additional sets in the same session keep paying off.
Ten exercises per workout is usually too many for a hypertrophy session with real rest periods: 30 hard sets take around 90–120 minutes at 2–3 minutes rest, and the last exercises are done fatigued. If you want ten exercises, cut sets to two per exercise, superset the isolations, or split the day. The red flag is not the exercise count but junk volume — sets far from failure added to fill a list. If the eighth exercise is done at RIR 5+ because you are spent, it counts for little.
How long should a workout be?
Long enough for your planned hard sets with real rest — and no longer. The arithmetic:
- One hard set takes about 30–45 seconds; a hard compound set needs 2–3 minutes of rest afterwards, an isolation set can get by with somewhat less (see the rest guidance in the hypertrophy guide).
- 15 working sets (5 exercises × 3) ≈ 45–55 minutes plus a 5–10-minute exercise-specific warm-up: a 50–65-minute session.
- 20–25 working sets ≈ 70–90 minutes. Beyond that, most lifters trade set quality for set count.
Sessions shorter than 45 minutes are not a problem if the sets are hard — the review of time-efficient training found that supersets, drop sets and rest-pause roughly halve session time while maintaining training volume (Iversen et al. 2021). Sessions longer than 90 minutes are not a problem either, if you recover from them. The limit is set quality, not the clock: every set on the list should be a set worth doing.

How many exercises per workout for beginners?
Four to six, all compounds where possible, for 2–3 sets each. Beginners grow on low volumes and improve fastest by practising a few movements often — a full-body session of squat, press, row, hinge and one or two accessories, three times a week, covers every muscle with plenty of frequency. Add isolation exercises when progress on the compounds slows, not before.
How many exercises per workout to build muscle?
Enough to give each muscle you train that day 4–10 hard sets across one to three exercises — typically 4–6 exercises on a split, 5–7 in a full-body session. The muscle-building signal comes from hard sets close to failure; exercises are the containers. Adding a sixth or seventh exercise only helps if the sets in it are still hard and the muscle has not already had its share.
Is 1 hour of training enough?
Yes. Fifteen to eighteen hard sets fit into an hour with 2–3 minutes of rest, which is a complete hypertrophy session for one or two muscle groups. If an hour is your hard limit and the plan does not fit, superset antagonists or use a drop set on the last isolation exercise instead of cutting rest below what your next set needs.
Should I do 3×12 or 4×10?
For muscle growth it barely matters: 36 versus 40 reps, both in a range where sets taken close to failure grow muscle. Choose by what lets you keep the reps hard — 4×10 spreads the work over more sets and often preserves rep quality; 3×12 finishes faster. The load and your reps in reserve decide, not the rep scheme.
Should I do more exercises or more sets?
Add sets first while an exercise sits at two or three sets — that is where per-set returns are highest. Add an exercise once a movement carries about five hard sets or when a large muscle is trained through a single pattern, because a different exercise loads regions the first one leaves under-stimulated. Rotate exercises deliberately, not randomly.
Does exercise order matter for muscle growth?
Less than commonly believed. An umbrella review of 14 meta-analyses found that exercise order, time of day and type of periodization did not directly influence the magnitude of muscle gains — weekly sets did (Bernárdez-Vázquez et al. 2022). Order still matters for performance: put the exercise you most want to progress first, while you are fresh.
