How to use
-
Pick your equipment
Olympic bar (45 lb / 20 kg) is selected by default. Switch to a women's bar, EZ-curl, trap bar, plate-loaded machine, or enter a custom equipment weight.
-
Tap plates onto the bar
Each tap adds one plate to both sides. The total weight updates instantly in your primary unit, with the other unit shown below.
-
Or enter a target weight
Switch to "Enter weight" mode and type your target. The calculator shows the optimal plate breakdown using the largest plates first.
-
Switch units instantly
Tap LB / KG in the header to swap your primary unit. Both values stay visible at all times — perfect when training abroad.
How much is 1–8 plates on each side?
In gym slang, "one plate" means one 45 lb plate on each side of a 45 lb Olympic bar — 135 lb in total. Every extra pair of 45s adds 90 lb: 2 plates = 225 lb, 3 plates = 315 lb, 4 plates = 405 lb, 5 plates = 495 lb, 6 plates = 585 lb, 7 plates = 675 lb, 8 plates = 765 lb. In a kilo gym the same logic runs on a 20 kg bar in steps of 40 kg: 1 plate = 60 kg, 2 = 100 kg, 3 = 140 kg, 4 = 180 kg, 5 = 220 kg, 6 = 260 kg, 7 = 300 kg, 8 = 340 kg. Every total below includes the bar — tap a row to load it in the calculator.

A 20 kg plate weighs 44.1 lb, not 45 — so "two plates" is 225 lb in a US gym but 100 kg (220.5 lb) in a metric gym. The ≈ column is the exact conversion (1 lb = 0.4536 kg), rounded to one decimal.
How the barbell math works
Total weight = bar + 2 × (plates on one side). To work backwards from a target, subtract the bar, divide by two and build that number per side starting with the heaviest plate: 225 lb − 45 lb = 180 lb → 90 lb per side → two 45s. In kilos: 100 kg − 20 kg = 80 kg → 40 kg per side → two 20s. If a target is not reachable with standard plates, the calculator shows the closest loading below and above.
Collars: ordinary spring clips weigh next to nothing and are ignored. Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) each — add 5 kg (11 lb) to the total if you lift with them.

Barbell and plate weights in lb and kg
Bar weights differ by type and region: a US Olympic bar is 45 lb (20.4 kg), a metric bar is exactly 20 kg (44.1 lb). These are the defaults the calculator uses — pick the matching equipment so the total is right.
| Bar | US bar (lb) | Metric bar (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Olympic Bar (Men's) | 45 lb | 20 kg |
| Women's Olympic Bar | 33 lb | 15 kg |
| EZ-Curl Bar | 22 lb | 10 kg |
| Trap Bar | 60 lb | 27 kg |
| Safety Squat Bar | 65 lb | 30 kg |
Specialty bars vary by manufacturer: EZ-curl 15–25 lb (7–11 kg), trap/hex 45–75 lb (20–34 kg), safety squat 60–70 lb (27–32 kg). Smith-machine bars are counterbalanced and often weigh only 15–25 lb (7–11 kg) — check the label or weigh the bar once.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many plates is 225 lb?
On a standard 45 lb Olympic bar: two 45 lb plates per side. (45 + 45) × 2 + 45 bar = 225 lb.
How many plates is 315 lb?
On a standard 45 lb Olympic bar: three 45 lb plates per side. (45 × 3) × 2 + 45 = 315 lb. The classic "three plates a side".
How much is 3 plates a side?
On a standard 45 lb bar, three 45 lb plates per side = 315 lb. Quick reference per side: one 45 = 135 lb, two = 225 lb, three = 315 lb, four = 405 lb, five = 495 lb.
How much is 1 45 plate on each side?
One 45 lb plate on each side of a 45 lb bar = 135 lb (61.2 kg): 45 + 45 + 45. With a 25 added per side it is 185 lb, with a 10 it is 155 lb. In a kilo gym, one 20 kg plate per side on a 20 kg bar = 60 kg (132.3 lb).
How much is 2 45 plates on each side?
Two 45 lb plates on each side of a 45 lb Olympic bar = 225 lb (102.1 kg): 90 lb per side, 180 lb of plates, plus the bar. Add a 25 to each side and you are at 275 lb; add a 10 and you are at 245 lb.
How much is 3 plates and a 25 on each side?
Three 45s and a 25 on each side = 160 lb per side, 320 lb of plates + 45 lb bar = 365 lb (165.6 kg). Three plates alone = 315 lb; three plates and a 10 = 335 lb.
How much is 7 plates on each side?
Seven 45 lb plates on each side = 315 lb per side, 630 lb of plates + 45 lb bar = 675 lb (306.2 kg). In kilos, seven 20 kg plates per side on a 20 kg bar = 300 kg (661.4 lb). Six plates = 585 lb / 260 kg; eight plates = 765 lb / 340 kg.
How do you calculate barbell weight?
Add up the plates on one side, double it, then add the bar: total = bar + 2 × (one side). Working backwards from a target: (target − bar) ÷ 2 = weight per side — for 225 lb that is (225 − 45) ÷ 2 = 90 lb per side, i.e. two 45s. The calculator above does this for you in lb and kg.
How much is "a plate" in kg?
In gym slang a "plate" is the biggest standard plate: 45 lb in US gyms (20.4 kg) or 20 kg in metric gyms (44.1 lb). "One plate" always means one on each side plus the bar — 135 lb in a US gym, 60 kg in a kilo gym; "two plates" is 225 lb or 100 kg (220.5 lb).
How much does a 45 lb plate weigh in kg?
A 45 lb plate weighs approximately 20.41 kg. Most international gyms use 20 kg plates instead, which equal 44.09 lb.
Are all barbell bars 45 pounds?
No. The men's Olympic bar is 45 lb (20 kg) and the women's bar 33 lb (15 kg), but EZ-curl bars are usually 15–25 lb, trap bars 45–75 lb, safety squat bars 60–70 lb, and Smith-machine bars are counterbalanced (often 15–25 lb). Metric bars are exactly 20 kg = 44.1 lb. Use the equipment selector so the bar weight is right.
What does an Olympic barbell weigh?
A standard men's Olympic barbell weighs 45 lb (20 kg). A women's Olympic bar weighs 33 lb (15 kg). EZ-curl bars are typically 15–25 lb (7–11 kg). Specialty bars vary.
Does this work for plate-loaded machines?
Yes. Switch the equipment selector to "Plate-Loaded Machine" — bar weight is set to zero, and you see the pure plate total. Most lifters track machine work this way since machine starting weight varies and is rarely labeled.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page is loaded, the calculator runs entirely on your device with no network needed. Add it to your home screen for instant access during workouts.
